Portrait Photography in Tokyo  | Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku

Tokyo, the bustling heart of Japan, is a juxtaposition of modernity and tradition. It was amidst this dynamic landscape that I had the honour to work with the fabulous Yllah, a  YouTuber whose videos provide intriguing glimpses into life in Japan. We chose the Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku for our portrait photography session, a location that promised to offer a serene, spiritual background against the city's fast-paced vibe. Our photoshoot showcased three distinctive looks for Yllah, each adding a unique flavor to our theme.

The first look was marked by Yllah's vibrant yellow top paired with a matching skirt. This colour, effervescent and full of life, matched her personality perfectly. Positioned against the historic backdrop of Hanazono Shrine, the yellow ensemble beautifully contrasted the shrine's traditional architecture.

Yllah's joyful demeanor brought the entire scene to life. As a photographer in Tokyo, I've had my share of captivating subjects, but the mix of Yllah's charisma and the shrine's ambience made this set truly special. The aged stone, the intricate carvings of the shrine, and the radiant Yllah in her sunny attire blended harmoniously.

For the second ensemble, Yllah wore a green dress. I positioned her in front of Hanazono Shrine's iconic red torii gates. The interplay of colours here was mesmerizing: the deep red of the torii gates in contrast with the green of Yllah's dress created an aesthetic reminiscent of a classic painting. Torii gates, symbolic of the transition from the mundane to the sacred, coupled with Yllah's poised look, added an aura of mystery.

Just when I thought our photoshoot had concluded, serendipity presented us with one last picturesque setting. En route to Tokyo train station, we stumbled upon a patch of lush greenery – a rare sight in such an urban expanse. I couldn't resist  capturing a few more photos. Yllah, ever the sport, quickly slipped into a red dress she had on her. The contrast of the fiery red against the verdant backdrop was pure magic. This impromptu setting, with nature at its foreground worked perfectly.

As a photographer, Tokyo offers endless inspiration. But what made this shoot remarkable was not just the city's charm but Yllah's versatility. From her bubbly presence in the yellow outfit to her elegant poise in green, and finally her fiery allure in red, she was the quintessential muse. And while Hanazono Shrine was our chosen backdrop, it was Yllah who breathed life into every frame.

If you're ever in Tokyo and need a portrait photographer, or if you simply want to appreciate the city's beauty through a different lens, remember to seek out those little moments of magic. They're everywhere – from the historic nooks of shrines to the unexpected green patches amidst the city.
