Desi in Sakae, Nagoya | Nagoya Photographer
Embracing the vibrant colors, rich traditions, and timeless beauty of South Asian culture, I recently creative directed and photographed this photoshoot in Sakae, Nagoya. The fusion of Japanese cityscape and the allure of desi attire created a captivating backdrop for three of my friends, Arushi, Shreya, and Norika, as they beautifully showcased South Asian fashion.
As much as I love living in Japan, since moving here, I’ve seen it all first hand - the Japanese media and entertainment industry often portrays a narrow beauty standard, always favouring fair skin and homogenous features. So I wanted to contribute to promoting a more diverse form of representation in Japan, helping to create a more inclusive society, where people of all backgrounds feel valued and represented.
As we ventured into the heart of Sakae, the bustling streets came alive with a unique blend of cultures. Against this backdrop, my 3 muses showcased an assortment of South Asian clothes, each reflecting the distinct heritage and style from various regions.
Sakae's modern architecture juxtaposed against traditional garments added an intriguing contrast to the photoshoot. The vibrant streets of Sakae infused a touch of urban dynamism to the images, while maintaining the essence of the desi theme. The fusion of cultures was visually stunning, reminding us of the beauty that arises when traditions merge.
The shoot also exemplified the essence of friendship and unity. The diversity of their backgrounds and personalities beautifully intertwined, creating a tapestry of friendship. The photoshoot not only showcased the allure of South Asian fashion but also celebrated the power of friendship and the harmonious coexistence of cultures.
